The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, Inc. (CSOL) and the Charleston Symphony (CSO) are proud to welcome home Jonathon Heyward for his CSO conducting debut Jan. 5 and 7 at the Charleston Gaillard Center. To celebrate the event, the CSOL and CSO are hosting a special program and luncheon to benefit music education programs on Tuesday, Jan. 3. The luncheon will be preceded by a masterclass with Maestro Heyward and Charleston County School District music teachers on the stage of the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall.
Jaimie Flack, CSOL VP of Projects noted, “This is an unprecedented opportunity to spend time with one of the world’s conducting stars. Jonathon got his start right here in Charleston as a CSOL music scholarship recipient, member of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra, and mentored by Maestro David Stahl.
He was appointed Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony starting in the 2023-24 season and will be the youngest conductor of a major U.S. orchestra. The CSOL is proud to have played a part in his development as a world class musician.” From 10 a.m. until noon, ticket holders are invited to attend a masterclass with Maestro Heyward and CSO musicians in the Performance Hall, followed by a program and luncheon at noon in the lobby with special guests Yuriy Bekker, Artistic Director, Nisan Ak, Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra Music Director; Mitsuko Flynn, Director of Education & Community Engagement; and Beth Connolly, CSOL Education Committee. CSOL scholarship winners will perform a brief program. A Fund Our Youth auction will be held to raise funds for CSO music education programs.
This season, the Charleston Symphony displays its deeply local, boldly global approach with a stellar lineup of world-renowned guest conductors and soloists, the introduction of The Project Aurora, a multi-season celebration of music and art born on our very own soil, and the homecoming of CSOL scholarship recipient and Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra alum Jonathon Heyward. The CSOL is a multi-talented group of nearly 300 dedicated volunteers whose purpose is to support the CSO, encourage talented young musicians and inspire classical music lovers for generations to come. The CSOL is the largest continuous institutional donor to the CSO. Last year the League provided over $210,000 to the CSO and music scholarships for student and professional musicians in the Charleston area. The League’s fundraising season began with its 25th Anniversary Symphony Tour of Island Homes on Kiawah Island and its 2023 car raffle, a Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid SUV.
Proceeds from A Charleston Homecoming support the Charleston Symphony and CSOL music scholarships for students in the Lowcountry. To learn more or to purchase tickets or to become a member, visit csolinc.org.
